Bird: Mountain Quail
County: Washington
Site: Johnson Road
General directions: Staleys Junction (Buxton) Hwy 26 to Hwy 47 towards Vernonia 7.0 miles. 1.0 miles past Tophill Tailhead of Banks-Vernonia State Park (rest room here). On Johnson Road 0.1 miles pull off. Walk logging road up hill of clear cut.
Specific directions: Listen at dawn and early morning for loud "Quark!" calls. Birds may flush from piles of slash material or side of road. Often difficult to get a good look.
Season: Resident, but calls April to May
Hazards: Observe any posted restrictions on access to forested lands.

Site: Timber
General directions: 1.7 miles south of Timber.
Specific directions: Park where blocked logging spur takes off to the west, overlooking a logged valley. Birds can be heard in early morning (4 heard at 7:30 a.m. on May 16, 2004). No good place to actually see the birds, though.
Season: Calls April to May
