Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
December 15-16, 2001
Bay City, Tillamook Co. Oregon
immature

Greg --
Here are 3 JPEGs of frame grabs from the sapsucker identified as a Yellow-bellied. The bird was reported yesterday by Donna Lusthoff and Bing Wong on the Tillamook Bay CBC. I shot the video this morning. Please post these on your Web page if you can .... Thanks!

The location was between 4th and 5th on Ocean in Bay City, just north of the city park. The bird habitually visited an apple tree with yellow apples. Identification is based on the striped or scalloped head pattern plus the fact that the bird is still not in first basic plumage here in mid-December. A Red-naped Sapsucker would have molted by now. Hybrids and intergrades in the sapsuckers are not uncommon but we do not see evidence of it here
