| Photo Quiz #6. |
|
This one was much easier than some of the previous quizzes. The long legs, and large rounded wings pointed to a heron. The dark flight feathers and gray back and upper wing coverts are unmatched by any other North American bird, making it pretty straight forward. This Great Blue Heron was photographed by Greg Gillson at Fernhill Wetlands, Forest Grove, Oregon in February 2007.

Notice above that I said the wing pattern was unmatched by any North American bird? That is because the Quiz photo does not show enough to separate it from the very similar European bird, Grey Heron. Great Blue Herons have rusty tibia feathers. Grey Herons have white tibia feathers. If Great Blue Herons can be vagrants to Spain and Hawaii then, certainly, Grey Herons could be a vagrant to North America. So, I always keep an eye on the heron's tibia!
