A little windier than forecasted, but small swell (4 feet) and 1 foot wind waves made for easy travel and fairly good viewing--especially by noon when the intermittent light drizzle stopped.
About 15 miles west of Newport we encountered a small (50 feet?) BLUE WHALE travelling fast. Some are still trying to say this was a humpback whale, but the mottled blue coloring and long, long, long flat back between blow holes and dorsal leave little doubt in most of the observer's minds. [See Blue Whale photos from a previous trip.

We headed west until we encountered the first of several draggers, the Miss Bertie out of Newport, it was another 8 or more miles to the fishing fleet on the horizon, overseen by Arctic Storm. This accounted for the large numbers of albatrosses and fulmars, though I can only dream about how many were just outside our reach!
